Drawing of Award

Does your mine operation have a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly form that the employees are required to turn in? If so, you have a wonderful safety tool. All that is necessary to make use of this tool, whether it's a time card, maintenance report, production report, etc., is to put a block on the form for the employee to submit a safety idea or report a safety problem. This idea can be as simply as to identify a hazard to be avoided, a safer way to do a job, or a physical fix or remedy to make a machine more efficient or safer. The miners often see things from their worm's eye prospective that management may overlook. The safety officer can choose the best tip submitted each week or whatever and award the miner. An elaborate award is not totally necessary. Recognition that a word of caution may have saved a friend or co-worker from injury or worse is enough.
