MSHA's Accident Prevention Program Miner's Tip Inspector for a Day |

MSHA strongly encourages mine operators and contractors to work closely with their employees to identify hazards and eliminate or provide appropriate protection. The following tip was received that suggests how to identify hazards:
- A Safety Manager from a crushed stone operation began annual refresher training by saying "Today you are all MSHA Inspectors. Your job will be to not only locate and find all of the fire extinguishers, first aid kits, eye wash stations and other personal protective equipment, but now you must also look for hazards and anything that could be done to improve safety in any area." The miners were divided into groups and a contest was held to see which group could identify the most hazards.
Examples of potential hazards to look for:

"Having a fresh set of eyes to look for hazards was a great help to our company."
Not only did the miners look for hazards and suggestions for safety in their immediate work areas, but more importantly they were looking for these items in areas that they did not usually work. "We ended up with a lot of safety ideas and eliminated many hazards."
