Longwall Move Safety - Shield Transportation

Printer Friendly Version
Safety and Health are Values!

Longwall Move Safety - Shield Transportation From 1995 to 2006, there have been three fatalities and several close calls involving motormen contacting protruding longwall shields sitting on low-boys (material haulers). When placing a shield on a low-boy, always remember to keep the shield securely anchored in the center of the hauler. Mark the shield with a highly visible warning device or reflective sign. Load the shield so the shield tip does not extend past the edge of the low-boy.

When operating a locomotive, do not position yourself next to the shield. Keep the longest part of the locomotive between you and the shield tip.

If you have a tip you would like to pass on, you can e-mail it to

If your tip is selected, you will receive credit in this space.
