Safety Tip: When approaching any railroad track always expect that a train is approaching.
Recently, a contract truck driver was fatally injured at a sand and gravel operation. The victim turned off a highway and was struck by a train as he drove his over-the-road truck onto mine property.
The following practices may save your life.
- Slow down and be prepared to STOP at the first railroad warning sign.
- LOOK up and down the tracks. It is difficult to judge the distance and approach speed of a train as it moves toward the crossing. Because of its size, the train appears to be moving slower that its actual speed.
- Be certain there is no train. Roll down windows and LISTEN for warning whistles.
