"Strut Charging on Haul Trucks"

Printer Friendly Version
Safety and Health are Values!

Over-charging heavy off-road truck struts can lead to a rough ride. It is important that the recommended charging procedures and pressures be followed as specified by the manufacturer. By using proper charging procedures and the recommended pressures, road impact is reduced creating greater operator comfort. Additionally, structural forces are minimized on the truck body which increases equipment life.

Strut Charging on Haul Trucks Servicing Procedure:
Equipment manufacturers have specific instructions on how best to service rear suspensions. Keep in mind that their recommendations should be followed strictly and all specifications met. Failure to follow proper procedures can result in bodily harm and/or damaged equipment.
Strut Checks:
The strut condition should be monitored at regular intervals (see owner's manual). Generally the space between the cylinder gland and the top of the rod is measured (see attached drawing dimension "H"). This check should be done when the machine is empty and parked on level ground. Equipment manufacturers recommend running the machine at least one hour prior to checking strut heights. After 48 hours, the strut height usually decreases after charging. However, if your strut dimension is out of tolerance, look for signs of gas and or fluid leakage and repair accordingly.
