Recently, a contractor was fatally injured at a surface milling operation. The victim was operating a tractor equipped with a rotary cutter. The seatbelt equipped tractor, which was operating in third gear high range, hit a series of small ruts in the ground. The victim, believed to be operating the tractor from a standing position, fell, and was run over by the rotary cutter.
The following practices may save your life :
- Operate mobile equipment at the speed that is best suited for the work being performed and the terrain/surface conditions. Start out slow and work up to a comfortable speed if you are unsure about correct operating speeds.
- DO NOT stand while operating mobile equipment that is intended to be operated from a sitting position.
- ALWAYS wear the seat belt when operating mobile equipment.
