Safety Idea

Designate Your Miner

Printer Friendly Version
Safety and Health are Values!

When a job requires moving machinery in a confined area where others are in close proximity, designate one person with the sole responsibility of communicating with the machine operator. With only 1 person communicating to the operator, focus will be on the specific communication, as opposed to others whose actions may be misunderstood.

Designate Someone
  • Ensure that nothing moves without Lefty's instructions.
  • Anyone can call a halt to operations, but only Lefty can start things moving again.
  • Machine operator stops the operation if Lefty is giving confusing signals or something unanticipated happens

MSHA extends a thank you and a tip of the hardhat to

a winner of a limited edition sticker and patch.

If you have a tip you would like to pass on, you can e-mail it to zzMSHA-MinersTips@dol.gov. If your tip is selected, you will receive credit in this space.
