Grade dump-point areas so that trucks are backing up a slight grade to dump their loads. This helps drivers to control their trucks as they back up and keeps the dump area better drained, making it more stable. The dump berm should have a wide base to keep the truck back from the edge, which provides added stability. Drivers should avoid consistently relying on the berm to help stop the truck; the berm should serve as a visual indicator for where to stop. Also, remember to keep the dump area level from side to side to reduce the possibility of tipping. A safe practice is to dump short of the edge and push the material over with a dozer ( See this).
Provide adequate lighting for improved operator visibility during night time operations or when necessary. This allows drivers to better examine dump areas for cracks, inadequate berms, or other potentially hazardous conditions.
