Safety Idea

Medical First Responder Identification

Safety Something YOU can live with!
Mine Type: All Mines
Category: General Safety, Training

A medical first responder can be a lifesaver in the event of an accident. Whether a certified EMT, a medic, or a person trained in first aid and CPR, these people are special. In the event of an accident, time is one of the most important considerations. One way to save time was suggested to Jerry F. Daniels, an MSHA instructor from Georgia, by attendees of his classes. Medical First Responder Identification

Medical first responders need to be readily identifiable. The use of special colored hardhats or a large hardhat sticker would alert their co-workers to their status. In addition, each first responder should be equipped with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including a Face Micro-shield and a pair of medical gloves contained in a sealed pouch, attached inside their hardhat. Additional articles that are mine or site specific may be included.

MSHA believes both of these ideas could be lifesavers.

MSHA extends a thank you and a tip of the hardhat to
Jerry F. Daniels of Jasper, Georgia,
a winner of a limited edition sticker and patch.
