Driver Fell From Trailer
A fall-of-person accident recently occurred at a District 8
surface mine. While dislodging a tarp on an over-the-road truck,
the truck driver fell. A contract coal-haulage company employed
the driver. As the victim rolled the tarp over the loaded
trailer, its stiffener pipe hung in the tarp's damaged web-seam.
The victim then climbed onto the truck's trailer to free the part
of the tarp that had caught in the seam. As the tarp came loose,
the tarp and stiffener pipe recoiled, causing the victim to lose
footing and fall approximately 7 feet to the ground. The driver
sustained a broken pelvis.
BEST PRACTICES
- Use safety harnesses and lanyards, or the equivalent, at
properly designed locations or structures when climbing onto
material trailers.
- Follow company safety rules.
- Maintain equipment in good repair.
This information was provided by concerned
miners in an effort to eliminate accidents. Accident or "close
call" information within District 8 may be shared by contacting
