METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On February 2, 1995, a front-end loader operator with 18
months of mining experience was killed at a sand and
gravel operation. The employee was operating a front-end
loader in the process of building a berm around the outer
edge of the pit. He drove the loader over the edge and
rolled down a 30 foot slope. He died from sustained
injuries. The victim was not wearing a seat belt. This
is the fifth fatality reported in calendar year 1995 in
the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this
date in 1994, there were five fatalities reported in
these industries. This death is the third fatality
classified as powered haulage this year. There was one
powered haulage fatality during the same period in 1994.
MSHA is prohibited by congressionally imposed budget
restrictions from enforcing the training requirements of
30 CFR Part 48 at this operation.
