METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On February 24, 1995, a customer truck driver was killed at a stone quarry. The weighmaster at the scale house told the truck driver that his truck was overloaded. The driver then drove his truck back to the stockpile to dump some of his load. He backed the truck into the stockpile face, raised the bed, got out of the cab and went behind the truck. The 20 foot high stockpile face collapsed and covered the victim with aggregate material. He died from suffocation. This is the ninth fatality reported in calendar year 1995 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1994, there were eight fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the third fatality classified as falling/sliding material this year. There was one falling/sliding material fatality during the same period in 1994. MSHA is prohibited by congressionally imposed budget restrictions from enforcing the training requirements of 30 CFR Part 48 at this operation. For more information:
