METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On April 4, 1995, a truck driver with nearly five years of mining experience was killed at a gold pit. The employee was driving a 190-ton haul truck loaded with waste material to the dump. As he was backing up his truck to the dump site, the truck caught fire. The fire engulfed the cab of the truck causing burns on 81 percent of the victim's body. The victim died the following day from complications resulting from the burns. This is the fourteenth fatality reported in calendar year 1995 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1994, there were twelve fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the first fatality classified as fire this year. There were no fire fatalities during the same period in 1994. For more information:
