METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On May 22, 1995, a mechanic with 20 years of mining experience was killed at a cement plant. The employee was in the process of repairing the exhaust system of a service truck. The truck was sitting on level grade in first gear and the wheels were not blocked. The employee was working under the truck when the truck's starter was shorted by a heat shroud he was removing causing the engine to start and the truck to roll forward. The truck's right rear tire ran over the employee. He died from crushing injuries. This is the 19th fatality reported in calendar year 1995 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1994, there were 16 fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the eighth fatality classified as powered haulage this year. There were six powered haulage fatalities during the same period in 1994. MSHA is prohibited by congressionally imposed budget restrictions from enforcing the training requirements of 30 CFR Part 48 at this operation.
