METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On September 19, 1995, a contractor truck driver was killed at a gold pit. The employee was driving a water truck along with a journeyman driver on the tailings dam at the mine. When the wheels of the truck came close the edge of the dam, the ground gave way causing the truck to overturn into a trench. The trench quickly filled with water from the water tank on the truck. The journeyman driver was able to get out of the cab, but the driver was pinned in the cab and drowned. This is the 32nd fatality reported in calendar year 1995 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1994, there were 31 fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the 11th fatality classified as powered haulage this year. There were also 12 powered haulage fatalities during the same period in 1994.
