METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On October 20, 1995, a mechanical scaler with 13 years of mining experience was killed at a zinc mine. There were no witnesses to the accident. The employee was apparently standing outside the mechanical scaler and was struck by a 5' X 6' X 6" piece of material that fell from the roof of the mine He died from crushing injuries. This is the 39th fatality reported in calendar year 1995 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1994, there were 33 fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the first fatality classified as fall of roof this year. There were two fall of roof fatalities during the same period in 1994.
