COAL MINE FATALITY - On Friday, March 1, 1996, a roof bolting machine operator was assisting with repairs to a conveyor belt that had broken during the production shift. The miner was pushing on the belt with his hands to maintain tension between the belt and power rollers to help feed the belt thru the tandem drive rollers on the belt drive. He became entangled between the two power rollers of a belt conveyor drive.

This is the seventh coal mine fatality in 1996. As of March 1 of last year there had been 3 fatalities. This death is the second classified as POWERED HAULAGE in 1996.
