COAL MINE FATALITY - On December 18, 1996, an employee of a salvage firm was dismantling an old coal hauler. Using a cutting torch, the employee was removing an adapter bearing from the trailer axle assemnbly. The ten-foot long steel bearing fell, striking the employee and fracturing his right leg. Hospitalization and surgery was required to treat the injury. The employee died in the hospital on December 21, 1996. This is the 37th coal mine fatality in 1996. As of December 21st of last year, there had been 45 fatalities. This death is the sixth classified as MACHINERY in 1996. No drawing or photograph availableFor more information: |
