METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On April 14, 1996, a contractor core driller died from injuries he sustained in an accident at a gold mine on March 9, 1996. Three employees were trying to free drill rods that were stuck in the hole they were drilling. One of the 24-inch pipe wrenches they were using to free the drill rods slipped and struck the vicitm on the head and arm. The victim died from his head injury. This is the 11th fatality reported in calendar year 1996 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1995, there were 15 fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the first fatality classified as hand tools this year. There were no hand tools fatalities during the same period in 1995. For more information: |
