METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On July 28, 1996, a contractor helper with one month of mining experience was killed at a boron mineral pit. He and another contract employee were disassembling a front-end loader. They were in the process of removing a tire by heating the lug nuts to loosen them when the tire exploded and struck both employees. One employee was killed the other was seriously injured. This is the 32nd fatality reported in calendar year 1996 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1995, there were 22 fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the first fatality classified as exploding vessels under pressure this year. There were no exploding vessels under pressure fatalities during the same period in 1995.
