MSHA - Fatal Alert Bulletin

METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On December 17, 1996, a blaster ( contractor employee) with 5 ½ years of mining experience was killed at a limestone quarry. The employee was standing on an overhanging ledge of a highwall when the ledge gave way. He was engulfed in the fall of material and died from suffocation. This is the 46th fatality reported in calendar year 1996 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1995, there were 50 fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the 2nd fatality classified as fall of face/highwall this year. There were four fall of face/highwall fatalities during the same period in 1995.
