METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On January 17, 1997, a contractor employee with 1 month of mining experience was killed at a cement mill. The employee was in the process of dismantling a kiln. He was on a walkway where a portion of the handrail had been removed. He fell through the opening in the handrail and landed on the concrete floor 30 feet below. This is the fourth fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there was one fatality reported in these industries. This is the first fatality classified as slip/fall of person in 1997.
