METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On February 5, 1997, a miner with 7 years of mining experience was killed at an underground gold mine. The employee had been scaling the hanging wall. He was found lying beneath a 8'x3'x2' slab of rock. This is the sixth fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were three fatalities reported in these industries. This is the second fatality classified as fall of roof in 1997. There were no fall of roof fatalities during the same period in 1996.
