MSHA - Fatal Alert Bulletin

METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On March 15, 1997, a contractor service employee with 1 year of mining experience was killed at a sand and gravel operation. The employee was using a truck equipped with a hydraulic boom to position a tire on the hub of a caterpillar loader. The tire fell off the hook and struck the employee on his head and neck. This is the 17th fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were eight fatalities reported in these industries. This is the second fatality classified as machinery in 1997. There was one fatality under this classification during the same period in 1996.
