METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On May 5, 1997, a maintenance coordinator (contractor employee) with 15 years of mining experience was killed at a sand and gravel operation. There were no witnesses to the accident. It is believed that the employee was headed out to a floating pump to wire the pump motor to the power cable. His empty boat was seen on the pond by other employees. Divers found the victim in 15 feet of water 20 feet from the shore where the victim's truck was parked. The victim had drowned. This is the 30th fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were 16 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the first fatality classified as other (drowning) in 1997. There were two drowning fatalities during the same period in 1996.
