MSHA - Fatal Alert Bulletin

METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On August 18, 1997, a contractor truck driver was fatally injured at a limestone quarry. The victim backed up to a stockpile to dump a load of material. He apparently forgot to unhook the tailgate chain and got out of his truck and walked to the rear. The stockpile sloughed down and buried him. This is the 44th fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were 33 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the 1st fatality classified as falling/sliding material in 1997. There was one fatality classified as falling/sliding material during the same period in 1996.
