MSHA - Fatal Alert Bulletin

METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On August 19, 1997, a contractor electrician/welder suffered fatal injuries at a sand and gravel operation. The victim was walking or sitting on a steel beam at the dredge when he fell 10-12 feet to a rock crusher being constructed below. He died the following day. This is the 45th fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were 33 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the 5th fatality classified as fall of person in 1997. There were three fatalities classified as fall of person during the same period in 1996.
