METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On September 16, 1997, a contractor truck driver was killed at a gold mine. The victim arrived at the mine and stopped at the security building to received his site-specific training. While inside the building, he noticed his truck rolling down the grade. He ran after the truck, fell, and was crushed under the left rear duals. This is the 51st fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were 33 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the 9th fatality classified as machinery in 1997. There were 2 machinery fatalities during the same period in 1996.
