METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On November 12, 1997, a crusher operator, with 2 years of mining experience, was killed at a sand and gravel operation. The victim was trying to unplug a discharge chute hang-up without shutting off the power to the crusher or it's conveyor. He was below the crusher's discharge chute when he became entangled in the tail pulley. This is the 59th fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were 43 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the 23rd fatality classified as "Powered Haulage" in 1997. There were 15 "Powered Haulage" fatalities during the same period in 1996.
