COAL MINE FATALITY - On Thursday, December 30, 1999 a welding contractor was fatally injured in a haulage accident when the Ford F-600 welding truck he was operating left the mine haulage road. The victim had been performing work in the shop area and was leaving the facility when he failed to negotiate a left hand turn. The truck skidded approximately 125 feet before going over a berm. The truck came to rest on the bottom level of a 160 foot highwall. The accident occurred shortly after midnight.

This is the 34th fatality reported in calendar year 1999 in the coal mining industry. As of this date in 1998, there were 29 fatalities. This is the 5th fatality classified as POWERED HAULAGE in 1999. For more information: |
