METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On June 24, 2000, a 58-year-old maintenance man with 7 years mining experience was fatally injured at a crushed stone operation. The victim was at ground level cutting limbs from a felled tree while his co-worker was using a hydraulic shovel to move cut trees. As the tree was being moved, it snagged on another tree, fell from the bucket of the shovel and struck the victim. Best Practices
This is the 28th fatality reported in calendar year 2000 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1999, there were 20 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the sixth fatality classified as Machinery in 2000. There were four Machinery fatalities in the same period in 1999. |
