METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On October 3, 2000, a 42-year-old front-end loader operator with 8 years mining experience was fatally injured limestone operation. The victim drowned when he fell off of a water pump platform he was working on. He was not wearing a life jacket.

Best Practices

  • Persons should always wear life jackets where there is a hazard of falling into water

  • Safe access should be provided and maintained to all working places

  • Hand rails should be installed and maintained on all elevated work platforms

This is the 39th fatality reported in calendar year 2000 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. (On 8/8/2000, the Fatality Review Committee determined that fatal no. 8 on 2/21/2000 was not chargeable). As of this date in 1999, there were 38 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the third fatality classified as Other in 2000. There were two Other fatalities in the same period in 1999.
