METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On July 4, 2001, a 44-year-old truck driver (contractor employee) with 8 weeks mining experience was fatally injured at a mica quarry. The victim was driving a loaded 30-ton articulated haulage truck down an 8% grade and exited the truck after losing control. The truck continued down the grade and ran over the victim before coming to a stop against a berm.

This is the 19th fatality reported in calendar year 2001 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 2000, there were 29 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the seventh fatality classified as Powered Haulage in 2001. There were twelve Powered Haulage fatalities in the same period in 2000. |
