METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On September 9, 2005, a 26-year old equipment operator, with five years mining experience, was fatally injured while operating a scraper at a pumice operation. As the scraper descended a grade, it veered off the roadway and traveled over rutted ground. The victim, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the cab. ![]()

This is the 23rd fatality reported in calendar year 2005 in Metal and Nonmetal mining. As of this date in 2004, there were 18 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the 12th fatality classified as Powered Haulage in 2005. There were five Powered Haulage fatalities in the same period in 2004.
