COAL MINE FATALITY - On Friday, April 7, 2006, a 49-year old foreman with 28 years mining experience was fatally injured while operating a 14-ton locomotive on a main line track. Prior to the accident, a steel I-Beam used for roof support was dislodged and protruded into the roadway. The locomotive struck the I-Beam causing damage to the cab and fatally injuring the operator. ![]()
This is the 23rd fatality reported during calendar year 2006 in the coal mining industry. As of this date in 2005, there were 3 fatalities reported in coal mining. This is the second fatality classified as Powered Haulage in 2006.
