COAL MINE FATALITY - On Wednesday, May 24, 2006, at approximately 2:30 p.m., a 34-year-old Utility Man with 7 months of mining experience was fatally injured while operating a battery-powered scoop. While tramming the scoop to the surface, a plank, 3 inches thick by 9 inches wide by 12 feet long, entered the operator's compartment striking and fatally crushing the victim. ![]()
This is the 33rd fatality reported during calendar year 2006 in the coal mining industry. As of this date in 2005, there were five fatalities reported in coal mining. This is the fifth fatality classified as Powered Haulage in 2006.
