METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On January 23, 2008, a 64 year-old dredge operator with 24 years experience was fatally injured at a dredge operation. While the victim was working alone, he fell into the water and drowned.

Always wear a life jacket where there is a danger of falling into the water. Set up a communications schedule with other when persons work alone. Ensure that a dredge has hand rails, of substantial construction and height, to prevent persons from falling overboard.
This is the 4th fatality reported in calendar year 2008 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 2007, there was 1 fatality reported in these industries. This is the 1st Other fatality in 2008. There was 1 Other fatality in the same period in 2007.
