H1N1 Influenza

Are you prepared?

As the flu season approaches, many are increasingly concerned about H1N1 in the workplace. MSHA has assembled a collection of resources for the mining community to help miners, supervisors, operators and family members learn about H1N1 influenza and precautions to take in the workplace and at home to prevent the spread of infection.

MSHA, in consultation with Centers for Disease Control (CDC)/National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), offers the following guidance in response to mining-specific concerns regarding the requirements for quarterly self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) training (30 CFR 75.1504(b)) and its potential for disease transmission, and precautions to reduce H1N1 influenza outbreaks, especially from exposure to sick personnel in confined spaces like mantrips, mine elevator, refuge chambers, etc.
  • Quarterly SCSR training, outlined in 75.1504(b), requires the miner to don and transfer training units resulting in multiple uses of the same training units by miners. MSHA advises that quarterly SCSR training should continue in combination with normal cleaning and disinfection for respiratory protective equipment.

  • General business guidance, available through the resources listed on MSHA's website, are applicable to mining. The mining industry needs to put policies in place so that sick individuals do not come to work and spread either the seasonal or H1N1 flu. In addition, company policies to encourage vaccination of employees and their families will be important in reducing the impact of disease. H1N1 vaccine will be widely available in the coming weeks. The establishment and implementation of these company policies and communications with personnel on prevention measures will help to minimize the disease transmission risks posed by sick personnel in confined spaces like mantrips, elevators, refuge chambers, etc."
