The course emphasizes hazard identification, avoidance, and control. Visual aids are used to assist students in understanding and applying safe material handling methods.

Manual and mechanical material handling and storage are included. Similar training materials may be developed for other topics in the future. Cranes and rigging (a more specialized material handling topic) are not covered herein, but may later be addressed by another course. However, some basic information on smaller overhead hoists is included.
