A variety of fire safety, and related, precautions apply to forklift operations, depending partly on the lift’s power source.
Forklift operators must watch for hazardous surface conditions, especially when operating outdoors. Bumps, holes, grades, water, mud, and ice can cause overturning, sliding, loss of control, or spilling the load. More cautious operation, including reduced speed, and/or correction of the conditions may be required.
Operators must also watch for overhead wires or other obstructions, and be cautious not to strike persons or objects with the rear of the forklift when turning or backing.
