Alcohol/Drug Abuse
The Mine Safety and Health Administration is very concerned about the use and abuse of alcohol by miners and mine operators while on the job. Miners everywhere should understand that alcohol and mining do not mix.

Hello, I'm Bob Friend with the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

The typical mining workplace is highly complex. Working in both surface and underground mines requires clear thinking, fast reactions, and sharp focus on the task at hand.

Alcohol can slow your thinking and reflexes. If you can't focus on your job because you're drinking, you can't react as quickly as you need to when there is an emergency. The same goes for your co-workers: if they are impaired by alcohol, they may not be able to function as they need to in a crisis, or when operating heavy machinery. While you are on the job, sound judgment and attention to detail are critical to ending your shift safely and going home to your family.

Don't let alcohol bring tragedy to you, your loved ones, or your co- workers and their families.

Remember, alcohol and mining just don't mix. Help us to send each and every miner home safely at the end of each shift.

    Thank you for listening.
