Independent Contractors Can Now Register With MSHA Over Internet

The Labor Department's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) can now obtain key information from independent contractors who perform services at mining operations around the nation over the Internet. Federal mining regulations require that any independent contractor about to perform work at any mining site register with the agency to obtain an MSHA contractor identification number. That process can now be completed over the Internet.

"This is another step in the process of making the many services MSHA performs for the mining community simpler and easier by using the Internet," said Davitt McAteer, assistant secretary of labor for mine safety and health. "This service is quick, efficient, and ensures businesses are in compliance with the law."

Earlier this year, MSHA announced a new service which gives mine operators and independent contractors the option to electronically file required employment and coal production information with MSHA over the world wide web. Current rules require that mine operators and their contractors submit specific information to MSHA on a quarterly basis. Since that service was launched, mine operators and independent contractors have filed over 1,200 quarterly reports using the Internet.

Independent contractors who need to obtain an MSHA identification number must use a computer with a modem to access the agency's homepage on the Internet at www.msha.gov. Once at the homepage, users must click on "forms," and then follow the instructions provided.

MSHA will continue development of electronic systems and will complete a similar system for submission of mine accident, injury, and illness reports (form 7000-1) later this year. Also, a system which mine operators and contractors can use for developing required training plans is under development and is scheduled for implementation in the fall.

MSHA welcomes any comments or suggestions to enhance the electronic filing systems as they are being developed. For further information on operation of these services, contact Jay Mattos at MSHA in Arlington, Va., on 703-235-8378 or e-mail him at Mattos.Jay@dol.gov.
