MSHA Conducting One-Day Compliance Assistance Workshops on New Diesel Rule
Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee, Nevada are Among Seminar Sites

ARLINGTON, Va. - The U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) will conduct a series of outreach seminars around the nation during July and August to assist metal and nonmetal underground mine operators in complying with newly issued regulations addressing the use of diesel powered equipment.

The new rule establishes standards aimed at limiting diesel particulate matter (DPM) levels in underground metal and nonmetal mines. Among other actions, the rule requires operators of these underground mines to train miners about the hazards of being exposed to diesel particulate matter. Some provisions of the new rule went into effect on July 5, 2001. Metal and nonmetal mine operators, including contractors, who use diesel equipment underground, as well as miners who work at those operations, are encouraged to attend the workshops. All sessions begin at 9 a.m.
