Chao to Celebrate National Mine Health and Safety Academy Anniversary
National Mine Academy's 25th Anniversary Celebration Open to the Public
WASHINGTON-Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao will be speaking at the Mine Safety and Health Administration's National Mine Health and Safety Academy's 25th anniversary celebration to be held Tuesday, August 14, 2001, in Beckley, West Virginia.
Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito (R-W. Va.) and Congressman Nick J. Rahall II (D-W. Va.) will attend the ceremony along with Senator Robert C. Byrd (D-W. Va.) who will deliver the keynote address.
As part of the celebration, numerous demonstrations will be performed throughout the day, including a mock mine emergency and rescue operation, fire-fighting techniques and a methane explosion. Actual surface and underground mining equipment will be on display, in conjunction with the Equipment Safety and Health Exposition.
As the world's largest facility dedicated solely to furthering a safer and more healthful mining workplace, the National Mine Health and Safety Academy has trained some 400,000 mine inspectors, miners, mine operators and other industry personnel. The Academy's facilities are used by miners, their representatives mine operators, state, national, and international mine safety organizations, members of academia, and MSHA personnel. It is the seventh permanent Federal academy in the United States.
