CHAO TO PRESENT AWARDS FOR MINE SAFETY
Sentinels of Safety Awards Considered The Most Prestigious In Industry


Washington -- U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao will present the annual Sentinels of Safety awards to eight mining operations from across the country during an awards luncheon to be held from noon to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, in Washington, D.C.

Considered the most prestigious award in the mining industry, the Sentinels of Safety awards are given to mine operators for achieving the greatest number of employee work-hours in 2000 without an injury that resulted in lost workdays. The Sentinels of Safety competition was created in 1925.

Safety winners this year include: Deep Mine #21, Paramount Coal Corporation, Dante, Va.; Antelope Coal Mine, Antelope Coal Company, Gillette, Wyo.; SSX Mine, Anglo Gold (Jerritt Canyon) Corp., Elko, Nev.; Cote Blanche Mine, IMC Salt, Inc., Franklin, La.; Rochester Mine, Coeur Rochester, Inc., Lovelock, Nev.; Thornton Quarry, Material Service Corporation, Thornton, Ill.; Arena Plant, Hanson Aggregates South Central, Altair, Texas; Briggs Plant, Fordyce Company, Victoria, Texas.
