Public meetings set for Virginia, New York, California and Pennsylvania

ARLINGTON, Va. - The U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) will collect information to assist in its deliberations about revised rules, which would protect workers who may be exposed to asbestos in mines. The agency also announced public meetings to obtain input from the public. An advance notice of proposed rulemaking will appear in the Federal Register on Mar. 29, 2002. "Existing rules governing asbestos exposure in mines need review in light of current knowledge," said Dave Lauriski, assistant secretary of labor for mine safety and health. "We want to get meaningful input on the best ways to provide protection for miners." Current MSHA standards on asbestos exposure were established in the late1970's.
