Workshop Targets Safety At Stone, Sand and Gravel Mines
"Spring thaw" safety seminar in East Windsor, Conn. - March 20
EAST WINDSOR, Conn. - The U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), in cooperation with the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association, will present a free mine safety and health workshop on Thurs. March 20, 2003, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Best Western Motel in East Windsor, Conn. Safety professionals from mining companies as well as MSHA personnel will share information and experiences in dealing with mining hazards with stone, sand and gravel mine operators from throughout southern New England.
"MSHA is using all the tools provided in the law - enforcement, education and training and technical assistance - to encourage all mine operators to embrace safety as a value so we can send every miner home safe and healthy at the end of every working shift," said Dave D. Lauriski, assistant secretary of labor for mine safety and health. "As part of this process, we are working closely with the stone, sand and gravel industry to develop seminars providing up-to-date and practical information to help mine operators achieve the next level of safety performance."
The workshop will focus on effective safety and health programs, safe maintenance and repair activities, and the hidden costs of mining accidents. Seminar leaders will also discuss specific safety hazards encountered by mining operations in southern New England. The seminar is free but advance registration is encouraged.
The seminar coincides with winter's end, when many intermittently operated mining operations begin producing again, often with new employees who are new to the mining environment. Statistics show that accidents in stone, sand and gravel mines tend to increase during April and May.
