MSHA Completes Investigation into Quecreek Mine Accident
NEW STANTON, Pa. - Dave D. Lauriski, the assistant secretary of labor for mine safety and health, will announce the findings of a federal investigation into last year's inundation of the Quecreek mine in Somerset County.
Lauriski will hold a press conference on Tuesday, August 12, at 12:30 p.m, at the
Quality Inn, 110 No. Main St. and Byers Ave.
On July 24, 2002, miners working underground in the Quecreek coal mine accidentally broke into an adjacent abandoned mine, which unleashed millions of gallons of water and trapped nine men for three days. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) provided critical technical expertise, leadership and rescue equipment as rescuers drilled 240 feet into the earth to reach the men and pull them safely to the surface.
