MSHA Web Site Available to File Required Diesel Inventory Form

ARLINGTON, Va. - The U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) today urged coal mine operators using diesel equipment at their operations to submit required inventory information using the agency online filing system site at http://www.msha.gov/forms/forms.asp.

"We want to make compliance with MSHA requirements for operators as simple and easy as possible," said Dave D. Lauriski, assistant secretary of labor for mine safety and health. "The diesel inventory is an important part of our effort to protect miners from the ill effects of diesel particulate matter in underground coal mines."

Information submitted to MSHA must include the number and type of diesel-powered units used underground, including make and model of the unit, type of equipment, make and model of the engine, serial number of the engine, and other specific data pertaining to the equipment and after-treatment devices.

The online inventory system allows mine operators to access a mine's current inventory, or add, modify, or delete items from the inventory list. Any updates on listed equipment or the purchase of new diesel equipment must be reported to MSHA within seven days, either online or through the mail.

When an operator logs onto the system, their inventory list will reflect the most current list MSHA has on file for that mine. Inventories of all mining operations may also be accessed by the public for review only.

Mine operators are required to file an inventory of diesel equipment used at their operations under rules intended to control and limit miners' exposure to diesel particulate emissions in underground coal mines.

To file forms with MSHA using the Internet, go to www.msha.gov. Under the quick links heading, click on the forms/online-filing link. If MSHA finds a problem with any inventory submission, it will notify the user by e-mail. Users with questions about the online diesel inventory filing may call the agency's help desk at 1-877-778-6055.
