Restart Hazards
-
Hello, I'm Dave Lauriski, head of MSHA.
Many mining operations do not operate year round. When the time comes to start up after down periods, there may be hazards on the work site that need correcting before you start working.
To be safe, consider the following:
The entire work area should be inspected for hazards. Ensure that safety guards on machinery and equipment are in place. Look for muddy or cluttered locations that could cause slip and fall accidents.
Is equipment lodged or stuck in mud? Once you free it, make sure it's blocked to prevent uncontrolled movement when it is parked.
Secure all handrails on elevated walkways and platforms. Clearly mark or identify areas where falling rock or other materials are a safety hazard.
Make a note of the hazards you see. Discuss the hazards with co-workers and how to correct them.
Thank you for listening and remember safety is a value.
